I though I have seen it all after the G3 tours a few years ago but I was wrong after seeing Generation Axe “Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi” concert at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on April 6th, 2016 in Vancouver, BC.
My buddy Charlie posted on his social media channel about this tour and I couldn’t believe it, It is the undisputed match in guitar, something that all rock music and guitar player lovers have to see at least once in the lifetime, this does not happen that often but it is happening and also I had the opportunity of doing photos the same night, doesn’t get better than that for me.
The super band jumped to the stage at 7:30pm sharp starting this six string show, I was shooting with my canon 70-200 lens from the audio mixer and from the sides, not too bad at all, after a short intro Tosin Abasi was the first guitarist to display his talent, he did played a four songs and then invited Nuno to the stage who played the Flight of the wounded bumblebee masterpiece that we all know.
Right after Nuno, Zakk Wylde got in action and as we all know, Zakk has a very peculiar style, I personally think the man is a best on his instrument and sometimes the way he looks like, Wylde delivered everything we come to expect. It was an amazing Zakk Wylde performance, he even went into the audience, a couple technicians behind him while the crowd enjoyed it.
Coming along, is Yngwie Malmsteen time, he also brought a Ferrari red stage with him, a lot of haze and Marshalls wall, is the first one that I saw looking more like a super rock star, I think he does look way better than a few years ago, wearing his black leather pants black boots and his open shirt he played songs from albums such as (Trilogy, Valhalla and Overture) Malmsteen was full of energy and very fun of photograph.
After Malmsteen’s performance, Steve Vai was more smooth and simple, He and Malmsteen player together on Black Star, the Generation Axe leader had every guitar not and emotions expressed on his face, Steve, Zakk, Nuno and Tosin played together on Frankenstein, Malmsteen joining and singing at the end the Deep Purple’s song (Highway Star).
It was the perfect end to a night full of talent, heavy riffs, monster arpeggios and shredding, definitely five of the best guitar players of my generation.
